THE TRISKELION: INTERNATIONAL SYMBOL OF BDSM

The triskelion is traditionally a triple spiral motif and has existed throughout history, with the earliest instance of it being depicted dating back to around 4400BC. The triskelion can take many forms decoratively and can be seen in church windows and even some national flags. Alongside this, the triskelion is also used in a stylised form as an internationally recognised symbol for BDSM culture.

The BDSM triskelion symbol

The triskelion has become one of the most recognizable symbols for the kink community and is a derivation of other triskeles used throughout history.

It is noted that the form as we know it today has origins in the classic BDSM novel "The Story of O". In the story, a ring is presented to denote erotic slavery though in present day the triskelion is used to symbolize an interest in BDSM in general, with some also using which hand they wear such a ring on to indicate whether they are a top or a bottom. This being said, the triskelion is not exlusively featured on rings and can be seen in any decorative manner, from jewellery to tattoos or branding. The BDSM triskelion is also seen on the BDSM rights flag.
