BDSM is a broad term to describe a wide range of activities, types of relationships and the subculture for those who wish to identify with the name.
The acronym BDSM is typically broken down as Bondage, Domination, Sadism and Masochism. Some sources extend this further by stating it as Bondage and Discipline, Domination and Submission, Sadism and Masochism. 'Fetish' is often also included under the umbrella term, but isn't represented in the acronym.
BDSM practices do not have to be about sex, or even be sexual in nature. It can be deeply psychological and emotional, with the connection between the people involved being heightened during a scene.
The fulfillment of fantasy through a wide range of practices, including physical and mental stimulation is what draws people towards experimentation in BDSM.
The practices involved are usually called 'play', while the time-frame in which play occurs is typically called a 'scene'.
